How Long Does Air Duct Cleaning Take? What to Expect

    April 6, 2026 5 min read

Before booking air duct cleaning, most homeowners want to know: how long will this take, and do I need to be home? Here's a clear timeline so you can plan your day.

    Average Timeline by Home Size

    Small Home

    2–2.5 hours

    Under 1,500 sq ft • 6-10 vents

    Average Home

    2.5–3.5 hours

    1,500–2,500 sq ft • 10-18 vents

    Large Home

    3.5–5+ hours

    2,500+ sq ft • 18+ vents

    ⚠️ Red Flag: 30-Minute "Cleaning"

If a company claims they can clean your entire system in 30-45 minutes, they are NOT performing real duct cleaning. Proper truck-mounted equipment setup alone takes 20-30 minutes. A thorough cleaning requires systematic attention to every vent, return, and the main trunk line.

Step-by-Step: What Happens During the Service

    1. Arrival & Setup (20-30 min)

Technicians park the truck, connect the vacuum hose to your system, lay protective coverings, and perform an initial inspection.

    2. Register Removal (15-20 min)

All supply and return registers are removed, cleaned, and set aside.

    3. Main Trunk Line Cleaning (30-45 min)

The main supply and return trunk lines are cleaned using rotating brushes and compressed air while the truck-mounted vacuum creates negative pressure.

    4. Individual Duct Runs (45-90 min)

Each individual duct run is cleaned with agitation tools. This is where most of the time is spent and where the real difference is made.

    5. HVAC Unit Inspection (15-20 min)

Blower motor area, evaporator coil exterior, and drip pan are inspected and lightly cleaned.

    6. Reassembly & Final Check (15-20 min)

Registers are reinstalled, the system is turned back on, and airflow is verified at each vent. Before-and-after photos are taken.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Clear 2-3 feet of space around all vents and registers
Ensure the HVAC system and thermostat are accessible
Secure pets in a separate room or outside
Remove fragile items from shelves near ductwork
Plan to have an adult home for the duration
Note any specific concerns (odors, dust issues, allergies) to tell the technician

    After the Cleaning

You can use your HVAC system immediately after cleaning. You may notice a slight "new clean" smell for the first day. We recommend running the system with a fresh filter for a few hours to clear any remaining loose particles. Most customers notice a significant reduction in dust within the first 48 hours.
